Gerhard Richter

German, born 1932
Gerhard Richter (German, born 1932) is one of today’s most important artists and arguably one of the greatest painters of all time. His style has become known as “characteristically contradictory” because he has painted abstractly and realistically, expressively and romantically and varied his subject matter as much as his style of representation. In Kerze (Candle), the artist’s romantic side emerges as he deals with issues of transience and instability. Richter’s recent retrospective traveled to Chicago, New York City, San Francisco and Washington D.C. and his work can be seen at nearly every major institution in the world
